College of Engineering Exchange Migration Project
The Office of Information Technology is partnering with the College of Engineering to provide faculty and staff e-mail service through the central Microsoft Exchange 2007 environment.
Current Status
The College of Engineering (COE) faculty and staff first logged into their UA-NET accounts on June 11 after the synchronization of COE and UA-NET accounts was completed. On Wednesday, June 17, we will begin moving Macs, mobile devices, non-Exchange Outlook, etc. to use UA-NET for mail. Then by June 18, computers will be switched to the UA-NET domain; UA-NET will then be the primary mail server, breaking the current two-way synchronization between the COE and UA-NET domains.
Overview
In order to provide reliable and economical e-mail service to its faculty and staff, the College of Engineering has asked the Office of Information Technology to integrate its existing Exchange e-mail domain (COE) into the central Exchange domain (UA-NET). The primary objectives of the project are as follows:
- Absolutely no change in e-mail addresses
- No e-mail downtime
- All saved e-mail moved to the new domain
- Minimal changes requiring action by Engineering faculty and staff.
Changes? What changes?
We'd love the transition to be completely transparent for Engineering faculty and staff, but it just isn't possible. There are a few things that may impact you:
- To prevent conflicts with other UA-NET accounts, some COE accounts were renamed on May 25 to match individuals' myBama accounts. E-mail notification was sent to those accounts by May 19. E-mail addresses and passwords won't change, just account names.
- After the mail migration is completed, you'll need to make a one-time change to your Windows login, selecting UA-NET instead of COE.
- If you are using other e-mail programs or portable devices, you will need to make a simple configuration change.
- If you use Remote Desktop to connect to your office computer, you may need to change the computer name.
Instructions on all of these changes are being sent to individual e-mail addresses and are also located on the details page. For information about when these changes take place, as well as some of the "behind the scenes" work, check out the project timeline. If you have questions, check the frequently asked questions page first, then contact the HelpDesk at help.desk@ua.edu or 348-HELP (4357).
